How can expats register for temporary accommodation?

english.shanghai.gov.cn

1. Expats staying in hotels, inns, guesthouses, schools, or any other Chinese establishment, shall present their valid passport or residence permit and fill out a form for temporary accommodation registration.

2. If an expat stays at a resident's home, either the host or the visitor must take the host's passport, ID and the host's household registration booklet (if the address on the household registration is different from the accommodation address - a housing lease contract is also required) to a nearby police station to register and complete a temporary accommodation form within 24 hours of arrival (or 72 hours if in a rural area).

3. For expats staying at foreign institutions within the city or at another expat's residence, the hosting institution, host or visitor should report to the local police station with the visitor's passport or residence permit and fill out a temporary accommodation registration form within 24 hours of arrival.

The local police station will handle the registration. After the applicant completes the form, the police station will verify the information and keep a copy on record.
