Since 2019, Shanghai has been aiming to establish itself as an international hub for art trading. In pursuit of this goal, the city has successfully hosted three editions of the Shanghai International Art Trading Month, attracting over 100 art institutions each year and organising numerous events.

In 2022, the format changed to "Shanghai International Art Trading Week" from its previous month-long format.

These efforts have significantly enhanced the concentration, recognition, and global influence of art trading in Shanghai.

The fifth edition was held from Nov 9 to 13, 2023, with the theme "Global Art in Shanghai".

This edition featured over a hundred activities, including more than 100 exhibitions and transactions as well as over 30 art auctions. It brought over 250 domestic and international art institutions together, with an estimated value exceeding 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion).
