Celebrate cultural heritage at Sijing town's opera and music carnival
The Sijing Ancient Town intangible cultural heritage opera and music carnival series kicked off on May 17 in Songjiang district. A variety of activities will unfold until June 15, offering visitors a cultural feast.
The event features an innovative blend of opera, performing arts, and other cultural elements. Visitors can don traditional Chinese clothing and classical makeup and stroll through the ancient town's streets for a unique travel photo experience. They can also play ancient games such as pitch-pot and chuiwan (an ancient Chinese sport similar to today's golf).
Cultural elements are woven into every corner of the town through flash mobs and parades. Visitors have the chance to interact closely with performers dressed as famous opera characters, mythical figures, and historical personalities. Cultural performances, such as Peking Opera, shadow puppetry, monodrama, and gong and drum displays, among others, are also on offer.
An opera and performing arts competition is also being held, open to people of all ages. Participants can register for traditional operas like Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, and Yueju Opera, as well as performing arts like storytelling, crosstalk, monodrama, and even innovative cross-genre programs.
The ancient town is also hosting cultural experience classes and mini-theaters, where visitors can learn skills like making medicine sachets, painting glass cups, and crafting agate bracelets from cultural practitioners.
In addition to the exciting activities, a variety of traditional foods await visitors. Xiaolongbao, the steamed buns available in popular flavors like fresh meat, crab roe, and vegetarian are a must-try. As Dragon Boat Festival approaches, the town's specialty zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings, also stands out as a culinary delight not to be missed.
