Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival & Dunhuang culture in Yangpu
A bilingual cultural experience themed around Dragon Boat Festival and Dunhuang culture, organized by the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum, will take place on May 31.
Dunhuang culture refers to the rich historical, artistic, and religious heritage centered around the ancient city of Dunhuang, known for its Silk Road significance and the Mogao Caves' extensive collection of Buddhist art and manuscripts.
Located at Changyang Campus in Yangpu district, the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum blends ancient mural themes with contemporary art. It is the city's most concentrated hub of Dunhuang culture.

1. Intangible cultural heritage sachet making (2 pm – 2:30 pm)
Discover the ancient art of sachet-making with Rongqingtang, a craft recognized as part of Shanghai's intangible cultural heritage since 2015. The Rongqingtang team will guide participants through an immersive experience that combines wellness wisdom, aesthetic expression, and seasonal culture. Craft a sachet, infused with traditional Chinese cultural charm, and let the herbal fragrance accompany the Dragon Boat Festival celebrations.
2. 'Staging Dunhuang' exhibition (2:30 pm – 3:30 pm)
Explore the first Staging Dunhuang exhibition, where 21 contemporary artists reinterpret Dunhuang themes through installations, paintings, videos, and calligraphy.
Led by professional guides in both Chinese and English, this tour delves into the exhibition's themes, exploring the interplay between ancient and modern ideas and unveiling the mysteries of Eastern aesthetics.
The exhibition goes beyond replication, offering a creative reinterpretation. Digital projections and interactions with historical artifacts evoke a deep cultural experience.
3. Dunhuang-style clay painting (3:30 pm – 4:30 pm)
Under the guidance of professional instructors, participants can create their own Dunhuang-style clay paintings. Using special boards that replicate the texture of Dunhuang murals, this activity offers an authentic hands-on experience.
Learn about traditional mural techniques, from the construction of the ground layer to the preparation of mineral pigments, and experience key techniques like line drawing and coloring.
