Jing'an light show celebrates renowned Chinese artist Xu Beihong
To commemorate the 130th anniversary of the birth of Xu Beihong, a pioneer in modern Chinese art, the 3rd Shining Shanghai Light Up Jing'an festival is hosting a special light and shadow show at the Suhe Bay waterfront platform.
Born in 1895 in Yixing, Jiangsu province, Xu moved to Shanghai in 1916 to pursue his artistic education. In 1919, he became the first Chinese art student to receive government sponsorship to study in Paris. This international experience laid the foundation for his lifelong mission to merge Eastern and Western art, heralding a new chapter for modern Chinese art.
During the festival, the walls along the Suzhou Creek are transformed into a vibrant canvas, where technology and art converge to showcase Xu's key works from different stages of his career.
The show begins with a presentation of Xu's self-portrait, offering a first-person view of his artistic journey. The narration, which blends the Shanghai dialect and the French language, is both lively and engaging. Dynamic light and shadow effects further enhance the experience, bringing to life a charming and witty image of the young artist.
Running from July 19 to Aug 19, the exhibition is open every Friday and Saturday from 6 pm to 10 pm. Please note that the schedule may change depending on weather conditions.
