Celebrate the Year of the Horse in festive Fengjing water town
This Spring Festival holiday, the historic Fengjing town in Shanghai's Jinshan district will stage a series of festive activities from Feb 17 to 23.
Against a backdrop of timeless canals and cobbled lanes, the celebration brings together folk traditions, cultural performances, parades, and seasonal markets, creating an immersive and lively opening to the Year of the Horse.
Highlights
1. Town-wide stamp hunt
From Feb 17 to 23, join a stamp-hunt adventure across 12 locations in Fengjing. Collect all the stamps to receive a custom Fengjing souvenir set or a Year-of-the-Horse mystery pack, filled with local treats and special perks. It's a fun and interactive way to discover the town's hidden corners.
2. Cultural performances
From Feb 18 to 21, daily performances will animate the town across two main stages: the ancient theater and the waterside platform. Enjoy comedy acts, contemporary folk music, and Chinese-style dance in a festive atmosphere.
3. God of Wealth parade
The fifth day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar, falling on Feb 21 this year, is traditionally dedicated to welcoming the God of Wealth, a custom that symbolizes prosperity and good fortune. On this day, two parades will make their way through the town's main streets and around Sanqiao Square. Performers will hand out lucky red envelopes to visitors, spreading New Year wishes as they go.
4. Specialty New Year market
From Feb 17 to 23, the Jinpu residence area will host a market that blends nostalgic charm with contemporary flair. Visitors can try their hand at Fengjing farmer-painting, dress up in traditional Chinese clothing for photos, and meet costumed characters on Feb 18-20. A special town-issued currency will also be available for use at market stalls and participating shops.
