Shanghai underscored the role of data product intellectual property registration in building a national integrated data market at the 2025 Global Data Ecosystem Conference held in Shanghai from Nov 25 to 26.

Senior officials at the event highlighted that robust IP registration is essential for fostering trustworthy, standardized, and scalable data transactions, which are increasingly important as China accelerates efforts to develop an integrated national data market.

Speaking at the opening forum on Nov 25, Wei Lan, deputy director-general of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, outlined how IP registration strengthens market governance and reduces transaction risks in China's rapidly growing data-driven economy.

Wei detailed Shanghai's pilot practices in data product IP registration, highlighting their clear outcomes and distinctive features. Wei said the administration will continue working with relevant departments to further integrate intellectual property and data elements.

The event was organized into four sections — conferences, business matchmaking, exhibitions, and application experiences — and showcased solutions that accelerate digital economy development and support cross-border data innovation aligned with global trends.

Organizers invited nine domestic and overseas academicians, along with representatives from over 400 data-business companies. The event featured 41 sessions and released over 70 research reports, industry standards, and technological achievements for public and commercial use.

A collaborative platform that connects industry, academia, research, and application was established at the event, with the goal of strengthening the digital-business ecosystem. It aims to share Shanghai's experience and practical solutions to support the development of China's national data-element system.
