Shanghai's data product IP registrations surpass 1,000
Shanghai has been advancing its high-standard pilot program for data product intellectual property registrations, promoting orderly data flow and full realization of data value.
By the end of February 2026, the Shanghai Data Product IP Registration Management Platform had received 1,518 applications, and 1,097 certificates had been issued following a thorough review by the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration.
Among the applications, 56 percent are for data processing products, while artificial intelligence and biomedicine sectors make up over 80 percent of the total. The registered data products have demonstrated significant value spillover effects. By the end of February this year, 289 data products (excluding big data products from major platforms like Taobao, Douyin, and stock exchanges) generated more than 4.8 billion yuan ($690 million) through external licensing.
Additionally, 166 data products had a total transaction value of about 3.4 billion yuan across various trading institutions. Meanwhile, 382 products generated about 11.4 billion yuan in service fees, resulting in a combined economic value of approximately 19.6 billion yuan. Moreover, 16 companies secured IP pledge financing loans amounting to 345 million yuan.
Since the pilot's launch, 569 legal entities and 211 individuals have applied for registration. Of these, 32 percent of the applications came from outside Shanghai. In 2026, more than 100 new market entities, including China Railway Group and Shanghai Vegetable Group, registered for data product IP protection.
