Shanghai has installed 8,190 additional automated external defibrillators across the city this year, with most of the devices placed in residential communities.

The figure surpasses the city's target of adding 7,500 AEDs in residential areas and major public spaces this year, as it works to strengthen its first-aid safety network capable of responding within the "golden four minutes". Statistics show 70 percent of the city's 28,000 annual out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in residential communities.

The plan prioritizes housing complexes with over 1,000 residents, aiming to equip each with at least one AED and achieve an overall density of over 50 devices per 100,000 people across the city by the end of this year.

To ensure that the devices can be effectively used by residents, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health is working with the Shanghai Branch of the Red Cross Society of China to bring "doorstep training" directly to communities. More than 80,000 citizens have been trained and certified as Red Cross rescuers.

Pudong New Area has taken the lead in this effort, installing 1,500 AEDs in residential communities this year and training 15,000 emergency responders.
