Shanghai hosts international salon for science, tech talent
Shanghai reaffirmed its global appeal to international scientific and technological talent by hosting the "Hi Tech" International S&T Talents 2025 New Year's Salon on Dec 31, 2024.
The event welcomed the New Year with forward-looking discussions and lively cultural debates on science, innovation, and culture.
At the event, the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission outlined the city's formidable progress, fueled by increased investments in R&D and foundational research.
Most notably, the Shanghai-Suzhou innovation cluster ranked fifth globally in the Global Innovation Index 2024, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization. With its evolving innovation ecosystem, Shanghai is viewed as advancing from foundational development to functional enhancement.
Shanghai has introduced a range of policies aimed at attracting and retaining international talent, creating a supportive environment for innovation. The city's exit-entry administration has streamlined processes to make living and working in Shanghai much more convenient for expats.
Participants emphasized that innovation drives societal progress, with talent as its critical foundation. They added that strengthening global exchanges and optimizing policies to attract top-tier international talent is pivotal for Shanghai's continued success in the global innovation landscape.
In addition to policy discussions, the salon highlighted cultural immersion as a vital element of talent integration.
Participants visited The Great Art of Dunhuang exhibition at the China Art Museum in the morning.
Afternoon activities focused on hands-on cultural experiences. Guests crafted traditional Chinese artifacts, such as rubbings, and explored the art of tea preparation guided by professional tea masters.
Looking forward, plans are for the "Hi Tech" event series to continue to innovate activities, enhance services, and strengthen global exchanges.
