Shanghai's Putuo district has launched a pilot program to introduce birth-friendly job positions, aiming to enhance work-life balance for parents, particularly those with children under 12.

The district encourages employers to adopt flexible work arrangements, such as staggered hours or remote work. It is also tapping into the local gig economy, including delivery services, education, commercial services, and human resources, to create more opportunities tailored to parents' needs.

So far, nine companies have offered 23 birth-friendly positions, with 269 job openings. On Feb 14, the Shanghai Youth Entrepreneurship Social Service Center was recognized as one of the city's first birth-friendly employers.

At recent recruitment events in Putuo, a dedicated section for birth-friendly jobs was set up. The district also uses multiple dissemination channels, including its WeChat account, to promote these opportunities.

Many job seekers at the event expressed support for the initiative. One mother shared, "These positions really address our needs as parents — it's such a relief."

In addition, the district is collaborating with community service venues and organizations to offer more resources and support for working parents.

An employee surnamed Li from the Shanghai Youth Entrepreneurship Social Service Center shared her positive experience with the program, "During my pregnancy, my company allowed me to work remotely, giving me the flexibility to manage my health and work. After returning, they even set up a 'mommy care room' to help me during breastfeeding." She went on to mention her recent promotion from project specialist to operations manager, allowing her to strike a balance between her career and family.
