AI agent talent demand surges, lifting graduate R&D pay
Zhaopin, one of China's leading HR service platforms, released the third issue of its 2026 spring recruitment market weekly report on March 17, highlighting a sharp surge in demand for AI agent talent.
The report shows that rapid technological iteration has fueled a hiring boom in the new-generation information technology industry, creating a large number of well-paid, high-quality job opportunities for graduates.
Following the release of OpenClaw in February 2026, Zhaopin data reveals that in the first three weeks after the Spring Festival holiday, job postings related to AI agents soared 455 percent year-on-year, resulting in a short-term talent shortage.
Development roles dominate the market, with algorithm engineers taking the largest share at 25.9 percent, underscoring the critical role of algorithms in enabling autonomous decision-making for agents. AI product managers rank second at 9.4 percent, reflecting demand not only for technical breakthroughs, but also for versatile talent with a grasp of application scenarios and interaction design. Programming positions, including Java, at 6.7 percent, and Python, at 6.1 percent, also rank among the top 10 positions.
By industry, the new-generation information technology is the main force behind AI agent development, with the computer software sector leading at 17.7 percent of postings. Other sectors, such as pharmaceutical manufacturing at 1.7 percent and academic research at 1.6 percent, are increasingly using agents to accelerate drug discovery and scientific innovation.
City distribution reveals Beijing as the national hub for AI development, accounting for 19.6 percent of China's AI agent talent demand. This is followed by Guangzhou at 7.3 percent, Shanghai at 7.1 percent, Chengdu at 6.4 percent, and Shenzhen at 5.7 percent.
Amid rapid development of the AI industry, major companies are extending more opportunities for graduates. In the first three weeks after Spring Festival, AI engineer job postings targeting fresh graduates increased by 39.2 percent year-on-year, 17 percentage points above overall job posting growth. Additionally, the average monthly salary offered for graduate AI engineer positions has reached 17,038 yuan ($2,480).
By industry, computer software, artificial intelligence, and the internet are the top three sectors hiring AI-related graduates. The most sought-after majors are computer science and technology, artificial intelligence, and automation. Graduates in mathematics and applied mathematics, statistics, software engineering, and electronic information engineering are also highly sought after.
In the third week after the Spring Festival holiday, the overall spring recruitment landscape showed healthy growth in both supply and demand: job postings increased 3 percent month-on-month, while job seekers surged 12 percent.
On the demand side, the Internet of Things and medical testing industries tied for the highest month-on-month growth in job postings, both at 9.8 percent. This was followed by science and technology promotion at 9.3 percent, demonstrating steady job creation in digitalization and intelligence-driven sectors.
On the supply side, the service consumption sector is rebounding, with online-to-offline life services, pet services, and the gaming industry posting month-on-month increases of 36.4 percent, 35.4 percent, and 35.1 percent, respectively. Emerging sectors, such as in vitro diagnostics, at 34.2 percent, and intelligent connected vehicles, at 31.6 percent, continue to attract strong interest from job seekers.
