In which outdoor public places is smoking prohibited in Shanghai?
Q: I would like to provide feedback on my last visit to The Bund. The scenery is stunning. However, cigarette smoke was present in many areas, making it difficult to breathe comfortably. I would suggest creating designated smoking areas or smoking rooms, along with clear rules to ensure smoking only takes place in these designated zones.
A: Under the Regulations of Shanghai Municipality on Smoking Control in Public Places, smoking is prohibited in the following outdoor areas:
- Public places primarily frequented by minors, such as childcare centers, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, children's palaces and youth centers, educational training institutions, and children's welfare institutions;
- Maternal and child healthcare institutions and children's hospitals;
- Spectator seating, competition areas, and performance areas of sports and performance venues;
- Cultural relics protection units open to the public;
- Crowded public transport waiting areas;
- Other public places designated as non-smoking areas under applicable laws, regulations, or rules.
Please note that The Bund is currently not listed among the outdoor non-smoking places specified in Article 7 of the Regulations of Shanghai Municipality on Smoking Control in Public Places. However, it is one of Shanghai's key sites where the city has promoted stronger outdoor smoking-control guidance, including signs directing smokers to designated outdoor smoking areas.
