Registration for the 2024 autumn semester of the Citizens' Art Night School opened on Aug 9. Online registration will end at 5 pm on Aug 23, and classes are set to begin in early September at various locations.

The Citizens' Art Night School is a public service project established by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism. It offers evening cultural, art and sports courses for adults aged 18-55 at affordable rates and flexible hours.

In 2024, the school will expand with new branch campuses and teaching sites, offering online and in-person classes. The school's main campus at the Shanghai Mass Art Center will oversee 37 branches and 367 teaching sites, totaling 405 locations across Shanghai.

The program plans to provide 1,125 courses to around 28,000 participants, including nine courses tailored for expatriates:

1. A journey into acupuncture

2. Guqin (a traditional seven-stringed zither)

3. Dim sum south of the Yangtze River

4. Shanghai foreign language experience class

5. Foreign calligraphy class

6. Blackpool sequence dance

7. Guitar fundamentals class

8. Practical guzheng stage performance art

9. Introduction to calligraphy

The autumn classes for expats have expanded with new offerings like acupuncture as well as meridian and collateral, in addition to popular courses from previous semesters. These classes are available at locations frequented by expats, such as the Shanghai Mass Art Center, Guangzhong Road in Hongkou district, the Huacao community in Minhang district, and CCIG International Plaza in Xuhui district.

Additionally, foreign teachers are now part of the night school's program, with the Jing'an District Cultural Center introducing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu taught by Turkmenistani teacher Ahmet Gurbanov.
