Q: I am writing to request guidance regarding a missing personal item from an accommodation in Shanghai's Jing'an district.

A ring was last seen beside the sink in the accommodation and was discovered missing after the guest had already left China. The accommodation management has stated that the item was not found.

This message is intended to identify the proper authority and reporting procedure.

A: According to the relevant provisions governing the handling of administrative cases by China's public security authorities, there are three ways to file a report: in person, by phone, or by mail. 

Given that you have already left China and may face language barriers, we recommend the third method: filing your report by mail.

To process your report, please submit the following materials in both Chinese and English:

1. Your personal identification information, including your name, gender, residential address, passport number, contact information, and age;

2. A detailed account of the loss of the ring, including the time and location, and a description of the ring's characteristics and value;

3. Supporting materials concerning the lost ring's identifying characteristics, such as photographs and purchase receipts, together with details of its brand, weight, and color; and

4. Booking information for the accommodation you stayed at.
