Shanghai athletes to shine at Olympics gala
With the Paris Olympics around the corner, Team China has gathered 405 athletes to compete in the quadrennial sports gala. The team is composed of 136 men and 269 women athletes who will vie with international powerhouses in 236 sports events.
Among the 405 Chinese athletes, 40 are from Shanghai, with 35-year-old star equestrian Alex Hua Tian as the oldest competitor, and 18-year-old diver Huang Qibin as the youngest.
Here are some ace Shanghai athletes that are set to compete in the Paris Olympics.
Fan Zhendong, Table tennis

From Rio 2016 to Tokyo 2020, and now to Paris 2024, Fan Zhendong has evolved from a promising rookie to a cornerstone of China's table tennis team. With four World Cup men's singles titles and two World Championships under his belt, Fan will once again strive for gold in the men's singles category in the Olympics.
Chen Yuxi, Diving

Born in 2005, Chen Yuxi will join hands with star diver Quan Hongchan to compete in women's individual 10-meter platform diving and women's synchronized 10-meter platform diving. In her debut Olympic appearance in Tokyo 2020, she clinched a gold and a silver medal.
Qin Haiyang, Swimming

In the men's breaststroke event, 25-year-old Qin Haiyang swept the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter titles at the 2023 FINA World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, setting new world records.
Zhang Zhizhen, Tennis

In 2023, Zhang Zhizhen helped China reclaim the men's singles title at the Hangzhou Asian Games after 29 years, which secured him a spot in the Paris Olympics. After moving up to No 33 in ATP Rankings in June, Zhang is expected to make new breakthroughs at the Olympics.
Alex Hua Tian, Equestrian

As a trailblazer of Chinese equestrian, Hua Tian made history as the first Chinese athlete to have competed in an Olympic equestrian event during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Last year, Hua Tian led the Chinese team to secure gold medals in both the team and individual events at the Hangzhou Asian Games, marking another breakthrough for Chinese equestrians.
Yuan Yechun, Golf

Yuan Yechun, aged 27, had previously participated in the Tokyo Olympics. His outstanding performances in various competitions this year have earned him a ticket to the Paris Olympics.
Zhou Yu, Track cycling

Gao Yi, Volleyball

Kite foil racing athlete Huang Qibin, born in 2006, started practicing kitesurfing at the age of 10. Despite being the youngest athlete from Shanghai at this year's Olympics, he possesses a wealth of training and competition experience.
