Gu Gong Square was built to honor Gu Yewang, a renowned scholar in geography, philology, history, and painting during the Liang (502-557) and Chen (557-589) dynasties. Gu lived and wrote extensively in Tinglin, even adopting "Tinglin" as his literary name, and his family went on to settle in the area for generations. At the center of the square stands a bronze statue of Gu and two stone tablets that record his life and works.

The park also includes a Tinglin history gallery showcasing replicas of artifacts from the Liangzhu Culture, a sophisticated late Neolithic culture that flourished in the Yangtze River Delta region more than 5,000 years ago.
