Sculpture exhibition 'Bursts' into success in Changning
Open: 10 am - 5 pm, Dec 7 to 21 (closed on Mondays)
Location: SPSI Art Museum (No 111 Jinzhu Road)
The "Burst" Exhibition of Zhu Yong's Works opened on Dec 7 at the SPSI Art Museum in Shanghai's Changning district, featuring over 30 sculptures by the acclaimed artist. Part of the museum's seventh academic sculpture series, the exhibition reflects Zhu's artistic exploration over the past decade.
The works on display include cast bronze portraits, dynamic resin sculptures, and striking mirror-finish stainless steel pieces.
Despite their diverse materials and forms, all the sculptures share a common theme: cracks. Inspired by natural fracturing, Zhu has developed "cracks" as his signature artistic language.
The exhibition is divided into two sections. One explores the human figure, using surreal and exaggerated forms to evoke unique emotional and visual experiences.
The other focuses on geometric shapes — highlighting the textures and patterns of cracks across different materials and colors, pushing the boundaries of abstraction.
"Cracks are like obstacles in my creative process," Zhu said. "I embrace them, trusting that they will lead to breakthroughs," he added.
The exhibition is free to the public and runs through Dec 21. An academic forum was held on the opening day and an innovative class will take place on Dec 21.
Visitors are being encouraged to experience the compelling beauty of contemporary sculpture in person.
