Explore Shanghai-style seal cutting and engraving in Changning
The second Changning Jin Shi Feng Seal Cutting and Engraving Works Exhibition is now open in Shanghai's Changning district.
Featuring works by talented artists from Changning and around the nation, this exhibition showcases a variety of styles and schools.
The unique Shanghai-style seal cutting dates to the Ming and Qing dynasties (1644-1911). Artists like Zhao Zhiqian and Wu Changshuo transformed seal cutting into an independent art form by blending ancient inscriptions with calligraphy and painting.

Visitors can admire works by Cao Youfu, a recipient of the 8th China Calligraphy Lanting Award, who fuses northern grandeur with Jiangnan ink painting charm in his pieces.
Shanghai's engraving culture, which evolved from an engravers' guild in 1843 and later adopted modern industrial techniques introduced in the mid-20th century, is also on display. Craftsmen like Liu Youshi and Yang Minghua integrated traditional hand-carving methods into practical seals, shaping the unique elegance of Shanghai engraving.

Additionally, visitors should not miss the calligraphy engraving by Shen Zhenrong, vice-chairman of the Changning Calligraphers Association, who used a basswood relief technique to create three-dimensional scrolls intertwining seal and cursive script strokes.
The exhibition is open to the public for free until March 30.
