Changning exhibition unveils fusion of printmaking and tech

From Woodcut Printmaking to Digital Printmaking — The Fourth Yangtze River Delta Young and Middle-aged Printmakers Invitational Exhibition is being held at the Shanghai Hongqiao Contemporary Art Museum until May 5.
The exhibition depicts the evolving artistry of printmaking, featuring works that blend classic techniques with digital innovation.
Organized by the Shanghai Hongqiao Contemporary Art Museum and the Shanghai Hongqiao Peninsula Printmaking Art Center, the free exhibition displays artworks incorporating various printmaking techniques, including woodcut, copperplate, lithography, and silkscreen, alongside emerging forms of digital printmaking.
Among the highlights, Fang Xiaolong's Power of Elegance No 4 uses sleek, dynamic lines to demonstrate the expressive potential of digital printmaking. Cui Tianchen's Between Reality and Illusion: The Wall-Hitting Twin Beast creates a dreamlike effect, provoking thoughts on perception and reality. Liu Shiji's Fracture employs bold colors and striking compositions to reflect on contemporary societal issues.
According to Xiong Youfei, the museum's director, the exhibition traces printmaking's evolution from woodcut to digital techniques, exploring its expanding boundaries and the interplay between traditional methods and modern technology.
Beyond the exhibition, a series of interactive events enriched the experience. On March 29, a creative journey invited visitors to explore AI-assisted printmaking firsthand. On the same day, a forum focusing on art integration in the digital age brought artists and audiences together for insightful discussions on the fusion of tradition and innovation in printmaking.
