Shanghai has unveiled five newly upgraded urban landmarks, including a major cultural destination in Changning district. The Changning Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Center, a nationally recognized pilot project for the integration of culture and tourism, reopened to the public on Dec 15, 2025.

Dedicated to showcasing Shanghai-style intangible cultural heritage, the upgraded center integrates exhibitions, hands-on experiences, interactive programs, and cultural consumption, offering visitors an immersive journey into the living traditions of the city.

The center comprises several themed areas, including an ICH transmission and experience hub, a folk-style cultural street, the Changning Huju (Shanghai Opera) Art Museum, and the Xinye Bookstore with an ICH theme.

The center on the south side of the first floor presents five municipal-level ICH practices, including dough modeling, literati incense culture, and egg carving. Visitors can observe and engage with traditional craftsmanship while exploring how these time-honored skills are being revitalized in contemporary contexts.

The folk cultural street recreates the historical streetscape of North Pusong Road and hosts an immersive mystery theatre production titled Beiyu Alley. The production allows visitors to participate in costume-based role plays and interactive challenges that bring ICH stories to life.

In addition, the center also houses a boutique store offering a selection of ICH-inspired products, including glassware and Shanghai silk embroidery. Hands-on workshops led by certified ICH inheritors are also available, providing visitors with opportunities to experience traditional craftsmanship.

During the 2026 Spring Festival, the center will roll out a series of special programs, including an ICH-themed Chinese New Year market and folk cultural performances. Curated ICH travel routes will link key spaces across the venue, enabling visitors to explore exhibitions, experiences, and retail offerings in a single, seamless visit.
