Tongren Hospital in Changning granted top-tier status
Changning district has strengthened its healthcare capacity as Shanghai Tongren Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, recently passed the evaluation for Level 3 Grade A status.
In China, hospitals are categorized as public or private institutions. Public hospitals are further classified into three levels based on size, research capabilities, medical equipment, and other qualifications, with Level 3 Grade A hospitals representing the highest tier.
Founded in 1866, Tongren is among Shanghai's earliest Western medicine hospitals. It introduced advanced surgical facilities, ambulance services, and diagnostic equipment at an early stage of the city's modern medical development.
Today, the hospital operates across three sites — the Xianxia Road campus, the Hami Road teaching center, and the Hongqiao International Medical Research Institute — forming a regional medical hub serving about 1.5 million residents in Changning and neighboring districts. It also undertakes key responsibilities in emergency and critical care treatment, as well as infectious disease prevention and control in the Hongqiao area.
