Q: I am an international student in Shanghai. My residence permit is valid for one year and will expire in August 2026. However, on Jan 25, I will return to my home country to renew my passport, and I will receive a new passport.

In this case, what should I do with my current residence permit after my passport is renewed?

A: After renewing your passport, you must visit an exit-entry administration office to apply to renew your residence permit. The required documents include:

  • Your new passport, the old passport that was replaced, and the original residence permit
  • An updated Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Visitors, reflecting your new passport number
  • A supporting letter from your university requesting the residence permit renewal

You must apply in person. The application should be submitted within 10 days after your passport is renewed. Failure to update your residence registration in time may result in an administrative penalty.

You may handle this matter at any exit-entry administration office in Shanghai. In Changning district, services are available at the following locations:

  • 3rd Floor, Building B, SOHO Gubei, No 188 Hongbaoshi Road
  • 2nd Floor, Building T5, Changning Art Park, No 377 Songhong Road

For further assistance, you may also call the National Immigration Administration hotline at 12367.
