How to handle my residence permit if I need to renew my passport?
Q: I am a master's student, and my residence permit expires at the end of July, so I have to renew it. However, my passport expires in November, and I will return to my home country in July to renew my passport. Is it possible to extend the residence permit, and then reapply after returning to China with the new passport? Or should I apply for a new X1 visa in my home country, and then apply for a new residence permit after returning to China?
A: If your study program has not yet concluded, we recommend extending your residence permit before leaving China to renew your passport. After obtaining your new passport, you may re-enter China using the new passport together with the valid residence permit contained in your old passport.
Within 10 days of your return, you may apply to transfer the residence permit to the new passport. Please present the certificate of passport renewal issued by the relevant passport authority, along with the necessary documents from your university.
