Can S1 visa holders apply for a residence permit without a marriage certificate?
Q: My wife holds an X1 visa and will study in Shanghai. I already have my S1 visa issued by the Chinese consulate, and we will travel to Shanghai together.
As the husband of a foreign student holding an X1 visa, and already holding an S1 visa, do I need to provide a marriage certificate or any other document proving my relationship with my wife when applying for my residence permit in Shanghai?
If you still recommend bringing a marriage certificate, would it be acceptable to bring only my Brazilian marriage certificate with an Apostille (Hague Convention), without an English or Chinese translation?
A: If you hold an S1 visa, you may be exempt from submitting proof of your family relationship. However, you may apply only if your spouse already holds a student-type residence permit with more than six months of validity remaining at the time of application.
