Following the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix and the Formula E electric racing event in Shanghai, another globally renowned motorsport event is set to make its mark in the city. From Sept 14 to 16, the 2024 MXGP Motocross World Championship will be held at the Shanghai International Off-Road Circuit in Fengxian district. This event marks the return of MXGP to China after its debut in Shanghai in 2019, bringing a new wave of excitement to the city.
MXGP, one of the premier motorcycle racing events globally, alongside F1, MotoGP and WRC, is known for its thrilling races and top-tier competitions.
When MXGP first arrived in Shanghai in 2019, it sparked a "motorcycle storm", attracting 25,000 spectators to the Shanghai International Off-Road Circuit. The event garnered significant attention as a major sports event, showcasing professionalism and generating notable economic impact and industry stimulation.
This year marks the grand comeback of MXGP to China after a four-year hiatus. Starting in Argentina on March 10 and concluding in Spain on Sept 29, the China Round in Shanghai serves as a thrilling climax for riders aiming for the season's ultimate championship title.
The Shanghai International Off-Road Circuit features a track specifically designed for hosting the MXGP event, which spans approximately 2 kilometers with 16 slopes that reach heights of up to 4.5 meters, forming a shape resembling the Chinese character "贤(xian)" in Fengxian.
Wang Chun, executive director of the organizing committee of the MXGP China Shanghai Station and deputy director of Fengxian district, revealed plans to comprehensively upgrade the event.
Wang said that the organizers aim to upgrade the MXGP event by implementing a "sports plus" model, creating a comprehensive sports industry complex that encompasses top-tier competitions, training facilities, high-end exhibitions, and forums, among other social activities.

This year's MXGP China Shanghai Station will attract over 30 teams from more than 20 countries and regions. It will also feature around 70 riders competing in three categories: MXGP (450CC), MX2 (250CC), and Junior (85CC). Renowned riders, including Slovenia's Tim Gajser, French team captain Romain Febvre, Spanish prodigy Jorge Prado, and Dutch speedster Jeffrey Herlings, will participate in the MXGP category, promising heightened intensity and entertainment compared to the inaugural event in 2019.
In recent years, Shanghai has hosted over 160 international and domestic sports events annually. Additionally, its market-led and government-guided approach has ensured the continual elevation of the quality of its sports economy.
Another standout event was the Shanghai Masters ATP1000 Tournament in 2023, which attracted nearly 200,000 spectators over 14 days. It generated significant economic impact through sponsorship, ticket sales and various product sales.
Shanghai's success in hosting top-tier international sports events highlights its commitment to becoming a global sports hub. As part of its efforts, the city is also driving cultural exchange, tourism, and economic growth.
Coinciding with the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival, the MXGP China Shanghai Station will feature a carnival atmosphere. Activities in Fengxian district, including motorcycle stunts, electronic music performances, intangible cultural heritage displays, night markets, and shopping bazaars, will be part of the festivities.
With the upcoming MXGP China Shanghai Station poised to further elevate Shanghai's status as a global sports destination, the city's cultural, tourism, and sports industries are set to advance hand in hand, creating a vibrant and dynamic environment for residents and visitors alike.
