Shanghai aims for global sports hub status with packed calendar
Shanghai is solidifying its ambition to become a global sports capital with an ambitious plan to host 178 international and domestic sporting events this year, according to Xu Bin, director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Sports, on April 24. Of these, 67 are international competitions and 111 are national events.
The city has already hosted several high-profile events, including the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix and the FIDE Women's World Chess Championship.
The momentum continues into May with a series of prestigious events. The Shanghai Longines Global Champions Tour, a show jumping competition, will take place at the Shanghai Juss International Equestrian Center starting May 2. The city will also host the Archery World Cup Shanghai starting May 6.
In addition, the 2025 Shanghai China Coordinates will commence on May 24 at the Shanghai Stadium and the Formula E World Championship will return to the Shanghai International Circuit on May 31.
Adding to the excitement, Shanghai is set to welcome eight new major international and domestic events. Notably, the World Rowing Championships will be held in late September, while the first FAI World Drone Soccer Championship will land in the city in November.
These events join a robust schedule that already includes the Volvo China Open, which successfully concluded in late April, and the first Yangtze River Delta International Triathlon, which will be held in May and feature an Olympic standard distance. Furthermore, the Ironman 70.3 Shanghai and UFC Fight Night are planned for May and August, followed by the World Grand Wushu Festival 2025 Shanghai in September.
To further promote sports engagement and consumption, the third annual Shanghai Sports Consumption Festival, themed "Shang-Hi Sports", was officially launched on April 28 and will run until November.
The festival will feature an integrated framework, encompassing a resource pool, promotional events, and themed consumer scenarios, including activities related to sports equipment, healthy cuisine, and outdoor events.
It also includes over 25 key related events like ATP1000 Shanghai Masters and World Rowing Championships.
The "Shang-Hi Sports" resource pool, upgraded this year, leverages the Shanghai Public Resources Trading Center's sports resource trading platform to integrate public sports resources and encourage market participation.
The city is also fostering partnerships with platforms such as China UnionPay, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Trip.com, and Dewu to enhance sports-related offerings.
In addition to high-profile events, Shanghai will also host the City Amateur League, featuring 15 league events, 27 branded sports activities, and 280 competition series throughout the year.
The 5th Yangtze River Delta Sports Festival, which returns to Shanghai this year, will take place from May to November. The festival highlights "sustainability, health, integration, and sharing" through a combination of competitive, exhibition, and activity-based events.
