Countryside cycling challenge gears up, runs through October

The 2026 Shanghai Hemei Countryside Cycling Challenge runs from April to October, with seven events taking place across Pudong, Chongming, Baoshan, Jinshan, Qingpu, and Fengxian districts. The first stop was held in Pudong New Area on April 19, drawing cycling enthusiasts from countries including France and Japan.

Routes for the upcoming cycling events

1. May – Chongming district

Route: Hengsha Ferry Terminal → Hengsha coastal white tower → Shanghai Yongfeng Art Garden → Meiyi Xiaodao → Huiju Bay → Shili Luwan (Reed Bay) → Hengsha Ferry Terminal

The route takes full advantage of Hengsha Island's unique location, where the river meets the sea, offering an authentic, eco-friendly island cycling experience. In early summer, the sea breeze blows gently as the white tower stands by the riverbank, with expansive artistic farmlands stretching out in vibrant green. Riders can explore a cultural and creative street, stroll through reed bays, and enjoy a rural getaway without leaving Shanghai.

2. May – Baoshan district

Route: Shanghai Sea World Riverside Greenway → Baoshan Riverside Park → Long Beach Greenway → Baosteel Group → Luojing Water Conservation Forest → Xiehou Pavilion → Rice field cafe → Gengzhiyuan (Farming Culture Garden) → Dendrobium Base → Century‑old elm tree → Yangliu Qingqing Homestay → Haixing village committee → Luojing Water Conservation Forest → Baosteel Group → Long Beach Greenway → Baoshan Riverside Park → Shanghai Sea World riverside greenway

This route blends Baoshan's industrial heritage with serene countryside landscapes, offering a dual experience of steel city charm and rural leisure. Cyclists can take in the views of the Yangtze River, explore Baosteel's industrial legacy, and ride through the Luojing forest wetland.

3. June – Jinshan district

Route: Langxia Country Park → Shanghai Blooming Garden → Neifu Nature Farm → Jiufeng Vegetable Agriculture Park → Fengjing Ancient Town

The route connects open countryside views with Jiangnan culture. In early summer, flowers are still at their peak at Shanghai Blooming Garden, while an ecological farm offers fruit and vegetable picking. The ride ends at Fengjing Ancient Town, where cobblestone paths wind through waterside corridors and bridges.

4. June – Pudong New Area

Route: Zhuqiao Cultural Center → Xinghuo Rose Garden → Yaodaxian Temple → Pudong Airport Enclosure River Greenway → Xiaochang Cream Strawberry Garden → Zhuqiao Cultural Center

This route offers a unique combination of aviation and rural scenery. In early summer, the Xinghuo Rose Garden bursts into bloom across vast fields, wooden boardwalks meander through the paddies, and a century-old locust tree stands tall. Cyclists can watch planes take off and land up close along the greenway by the river that borders the airport and explore the cultural heritage at Yaodaxian Temple.

5. September – Qingpu district

Route: Lianhu village → Tao Hua Yuan Ji → Qingxi Country Park → South‑North Art Museum → Taipu River → Cenbu Eco‑Culture Village

The route highlights Qingpu's classic Jiangnan water town character. In early autumn, the pond cypress trees in Qingxi Country Park are lush and green, while the Taipu River sparkles under the sun. Riders may spot egrets flying overhead, explore an art museum converted from a traditional farmhouse, and soak in the peaceful elegance of rural life in Cenbu Eco-Culture Village.

6. October – Fengxian district

Route: Zhuanghang Country Park → Urban Orchard → Chunzhi Contemporary Porcelain Museum → Grain Heaven → Huakai Banxia Homestay → Jinhai Lake

Tied to the harvest season of late autumn, this route combines orchard picking, intangible cultural heritage experiences, and countryside homestays. Cyclists pass through golden rice fields and fragrant fruit orchards, sample fresh seasonal produce, try their hand at ceramic crafts, and finish at Jinhai Lake, a landmark that demonstrates how sports can drive rural economic development.
