Sports for all: Shanghai Mass Sports Season opens with 130+ events

The inaugural Shanghai Mass Sports Season kicked off on June 27 at the Bund Central Plaza. Built around the principles of broad participation, diversity, and fun, the season brings a wide range of sports events to major commercial zones and landmark destinations across the city, encouraging residents and visitors to get involved.

Opening-day highlights

At the opening ceremony, a calendar of key events for the season was unveiled, while a variety of trendy sports activities took place along Nanjing Road, one of China's best-known shopping streets.

Following the official launch, the Huangpu leg of the Explore Shanghai City Orienteering Series got underway. More than 180 participants formed teams of three and set off on a city orienteering challenge. They included over 150 international participants from 33 countries and regions.

The Shanghai E Shooting Open also began at the Bund Central Plaza that day. Professional athletes showcased their marksmanship in daytime competitions, while visitors could try the sport for free in the evening.

A blend of sports, culture, tourism, and commerce

The 2026 Shanghai Mass Sports Season will run from June through October, with at least 130 sporting events and carnivals planned. The program caters to all ages and covers a broad range of sports.

The season will also connect sports with commerce, culture, and tourism. Through partnerships with platforms such as Meituan and Weibo, participants will have access to a range of benefits and discounts, allowing them to combine exercise with dining, shopping and entertainment.
