Here's what you need to know to join.
Understanding martial arts
Chinese martial arts have a long and rich history, integrating Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist philosophies into a profound cultural tradition. At their core, they embody a spirit of peace and the wisdom of life. Each movement reflects the balance of yin and yang, symbolizing the Chinese understanding of the universe, nature, and human existence.
In general, Chinese martial arts can be categorized into two main styles:
- Internal martial arts
Representatives: tai chi, xingyiquan
Characteristics: Slow, flowing movements combined with deep breathing and mindful energy control. They cultivate both the body and the mind, in alignment with Eastern philosophy.
- External martial arts
Representatives: shaolinquan, changquan
Characteristics: Vigorous, powerful movements that strengthen the body and inspire boldness and decisiveness.
Martial arts weapons — such as the sword, broadsword, staff, and spear — each carry distinctive techniques and artistic appeal.
