Do applicants to English-taught programs need to pass HSK test?
Q: I am an independent college counselor as well as the founder of an educational center in Kyrgyzstan. I work with high school students who are preparing to apply for undergraduate studies in China.
Could you clarify whether it is mandatory for applicants to hold an HSK Level 4 or higher certificate when applying for the Shanghai Government Scholarship, even if the student plans to enroll in a bachelor's program fully taught in English?
A: For undergraduate international students in China, programs taught in Chinese require applicants to have Chinese language proficiency at or above HSK Level 4.
For programs taught in a foreign language, universities are required to clearly specify the corresponding foreign language proficiency requirements.
Admission criteria vary by institution and program. Universities set their own enrollment standards in accordance with relevant regulations and conduct admissions independently.
The Shanghai Government Scholarship supports outstanding international students. For detailed eligibility requirements, please visit the Study in Shanghai website.
