As summer evenings settle over Shanghai, fireflies begin their quiet dance across wetlands and rural villages. Here are three spots where visitors can witness these glowing creatures.

Cenbu village

Nestled in Qingpu district, Cenbu village is crisscrossed by waterways and surrounded by lush vegetation. Recognized as a national ecological and cultural village, it is one of the few places in the city where fireflies can still be found in large numbers.

Each night after 8 pm, the streetlights on the main road are switched off to allow the fireflies to shine. The glowing lights along the water and through the trees craft an enchanting and romantic scene.

This summer, the village has recorded the highest number of fireflies ever observed, making it a particularly good spot for sightings.

Best viewing spot: The firefly forest area

Best viewing time: Currently at its peak, with optimal viewing between 8 pm and 9 pm

How to get there: Driving is recommended. Parking is available along Xingangcun Road (Nos 300-383) and Cenbu Road (Nos 220-282). From there, it is a short walk to the firefly forest.

Suggested itinerary: Go kayaking or paddleboarding through the water forest during the day, relax at a cafe in the rice fields in the afternoon, and head out for firefly spotting after dinner.

Xinjiangwan Wetland

Xinjiangwan Wetland in Yangpu district is the last remaining ecological wetland in central Shanghai, often called the city's "green lung". Its waterways and shrubbery have preserved a natural habitat where fireflies continue to thrive.

Most of the fireflies found here are yellow-veined. Residents have reported seeing them along the wetland riverbanks and near the waterways at the nearby sports park.

Best viewing spots: Xinjiangwan ecological corridor (near the Jingsan River wetland section) and surrounding waterways)

How to get there: Take Metro Line 10 to Xinjiangwancheng Station or East Yingao Road Station, then walk or cycle to the wetland.

Gongping village

Gongping village in Nicheng town, Lin-gang Special Area, is a lesser-known yet ecologically rich spot. The village features natural wetlands and well-preserved water systems. In recent years, local efforts to promote ecological farming and reduce artificial lighting have helped create a favorable environment for fireflies.

On summer nights, fireflies can be spotted along the rivers and in the rice paddies. The village has established a firefly conservation area with free viewing sessions through Aug 30. Sessions are held Friday through Sunday from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm, weather permitting.

How to get there: Driving is recommended. Parking is available in the village.

Suggested itinerary: Spend the day at Dishui Lake, visit the China Maritime Museum or Haichang Ocean Park, then drive 15-20 minutes to Gongping village for a farmhouse dinner before heading out to look for fireflies.

A few reminders

• Fireflies are sensitive to light. Please avoid using flash photography or strong flashlights, as artificial light can disrupt their mating signals and cause stress.
• Do not catch or take fireflies home, as they rarely survive outside their natural habitat.
• Chemical insect repellents and perfumes can harm fireflies; wearing light-colored long-sleeved shirts and trousers is a safer way to avoid mosquito bites.
