Shanghai Polar Pavilion opens in Minhang
A new polar science venue opened in Minhang district on Sept 28, offering visitors a chance to explore the Arctic and Antarctic in a single day through immersive shows, hands-on activities, and authentic polar research exhibits.
The venue, named Polar International Center Shanghai Polar Pavilion, was developed through cooperation between Shanghai and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It occupies approximately 7,000 square meters and features six themed sections covering topics including polar geography, exploration history, biodiversity, subglacial landscape, and global climate change.
In the entrance hall, two screens display Arctic and Antarctic landscapes. Interactive installations also let visitors feel polar-water temperatures.
Powered by XR technology, a polar storm experience zone features simulated snowfall, with temperatures inside dropping to around minus 10 C. Down jackets are provided free of charge for visitors to wear during the experience.
Inspired by a Chinese Antarctic research rescue mission, the "Icy Sea Expedition" experience recreates polar icebreaker navigation scenes in a 5D motion theater. An Antarctic-themed VR exploration experience is also available.
The venue also displays life-size models of various polar animals, interactive devices that reproduce whale sounds, biological specimens, and authentic ice-core samples collected from Antarctica, the Arctic, and the Himalayas.
Exhibits also highlight four decades of China's polar research and exploration.
A cultural and creative product area and a cafe are located near the exit. Visitors can collect stamps during their visit and redeem them for drinks at the cafe.
The venue offers scheduled guided tours on public holidays. Additionally, several members of the venue team have participated in polar expeditions.
