Q: I signed an offer letter and contract with a school in Shanghai. Since the Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit is still being processed, is it acceptable to arrive in Shanghai on my L visa while my school works on getting my work permit and Z visa?

A: The Z visa must be issued by a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad and cannot be converted from an L (tourist) visa after entering China.

It is recommended that you apply for a Z visa before traveling.

As the Z visa is usually valid for a short period, confirm the estimated processing time for your work permit with the relevant authorities before traveling to China.
