Is a Hong Kong-Shanghai-Tokyo itinerary eligible for visa-free transit?
Q: I would like to know whether a Ukrainian national would be permitted to enter China under the visa-free transit policy with an itinerary from Tokyo to Hong Kong, then Hong Kong to Shanghai, and finally back to Tokyo.
Hong Kong will be used solely as a transit point, and the traveler will not pass through immigration there.
A: Please confirm with your airline in advance whether your journey from Tokyo to Shanghai is a direct flight with a stopover in Hong Kong or as a connecting flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai.
- If it is a connecting flight, you may apply for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, provided that you hold a valid Ukrainian international travel document with at least three months' validity remaining, as well as a confirmed onward ticket with a fixed date and seat.
- If it is a direct flight, your itinerary will not meet the requirements for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy.
Final eligibility is subject to assessment by the immigration authorities at the port of entry.
