To celebrate Chinese New Year, several hotels and renowned establishments in Shanghai have introduced some delightful New Year food.

 

The Peninsula Shanghai Hotel

To celebrate Chinese New Year, the Michelin-starred team at the Yi Long Court in the Peninsula Shanghai Hotel has crafted the Sugar Rice Cake. This dessert blends brown sugar and coconut milk to deliver a sweet and chewy delicacy.

The cake symbolizes good fortune for the upcoming year, as the Chinese word for rice cake, "nian gao", is a homonym that literally means "higher each year". This concept signifies the idea of improving each year compared to the previous one.

As a mixed and auspicious one-pot stew dish, Poon Choi originated in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) and is one of the most iconic dishes in Cantonese cuisine. The Poon Choi from Grand Central Hotel Shanghai — a five-star hotel under the time-honored brand Wang Bao He — features a variety of premium ingredients such as abalone, sea cucumber, fish maw, goose feet, shiitake mushrooms, and lotus roots, arranged layer by layer. Prepared by Cantonese chefs, the dish is topped with luxurious seafood with lotus roots and mushrooms at the bottom, slow cooked to preserve the original flavors of the ingredients, resulting in a rich taste.
