Shanghai, as a national pilot zone for digital education, has rolled out a three-year action plan to boost its educational digital transformation under the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), Wang Hao, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, said on Jan 26.

Wang made the remarks at a news conference held by the Ministry of Education, which introduced the preparation for the 2024 World Digital Education Conference and the progress of educational digitalization in China over the past year.

According to Wang, Shanghai has been proactively building a digital education system, with key initiatives in the following aspects:

First, schools in Shanghai have embraced advanced technologies such as metaverse, digital simulation and AI modeling, to create immersive and interactive learning environments. Efforts have been made to enhance teachers' research and teaching capabilities while promoting personalized and diversified learning and growth for students. Over the past three years, Shanghai has established 30 demonstration schools for digital transformation and over 200 benchmark schools for digital information applications.

Second, the city has integrated and consolidated various education-related resources and applied big data to support educational decision-making, quality monitoring and scientific evaluation. Additionally, efforts have been made to establish one-stop educational service platforms, providing easy access to numerous educational functions.

Third, Shanghai has developed key projects such as digital teaching systems and integrated platforms for teachers' training and continued to build the Shanghai Smart Education Platform. It has created various online learning spaces and constructed an ecosystem for digital education applications.

Wang said that Shanghai's educational digital transformation has achieved remarkable results and the commission will further deepen the development of digital education in Shanghai as a national pilot zone, aiming to leverage the unique role of digitalization in promoting large-scale personalized education and sharing high-quality educational resources.
