China makes strides in digital education
China has made remarkable achievements in advancing digital education in the past year, according to Zhou Dawang, director of the Department of Science, Technology and Informatization under the Ministry of Education.
Zhou briefed the media on the progress of digital education at a press conference held by the ministry on Jan 26.
He highlighted six major accomplishments:
First, the first national on-site promotion meeting on digital education was held, targeting the central and western regions. The ministry also set up an advisory committee on digital education and a special working group for the Smart Education of China platform, which is the world's largest digital learning platform.
Second, the Smart Education of China platform was upgraded five times, launching a national smart education reading platform and a Smart Education application. The platform also enriched its resources and extended its online services for studying abroad.
Third, the Smart Education of China platform saw a significant expansion of its application scope. By the end of 2023, the platform had over 100 million registered users and more than 36.7 billion views from 2.5 billion visitors.
Fourth, a national big data center on digital education began construction. The center aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of education governance, broaden the operational monitoring of the Smart Education of China platform and increase the utilization of online education applications through big data technology.
Fifth, the security management for digital education was improved. The ministry released a series of standards on platforms, data and resources to ensure the quality of digital education. It also carried out a special inspection of the resources on the Smart Education of China platform to ensure content security.
Lastly, China's international influence in digital education rose significantly. China has been seeking global cooperation in digital education, such as promoting the establishment of a digital education cooperation mechanism among BRICS countries and hosting the China-ASEAN digital education forum. In addition, the Smart Education of China platform won the 2022 UNESCO Information and Communication Technology in Education prize.
