WorldSkills International is the authoritative non-governmental global organization that governs and organizes the WorldSkills Competition, the world’s most prestigious vocational skills event.

Origin & history

Founded in 1950 by Spain and Portugal, the organization was originally named the International Vocational Training Organization, or IVTO, and officially renamed WorldSkills International in 2000.

With its registered office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, it was established to address the shortage of skilled workers after World War II and to advance vocational training worldwide.

As of January 2026, it has 90 member countries and regions, representing two-thirds of the world’s population.

Vision & mission

Its official vision is "Improving our world with the power of skills". The organization aims to raise the profile and recognition of skilled people and to demonstrate how vital skills are for achieving economic growth and personal success.

In addition to hosting the biennial WorldSkills Competition, it develops unified international skill standards, shares advanced training experience, and collaborates with international institutions to advance vocational education worldwide.
