Shanghai contestants shape up at 47th WorldSkills Competition

The 47th WorldSkills Competition opened in the city of Lyon in France on Sept 10, and contestants from Shanghai were among the ranks of the hopefuls. 

The WorldSkills Competition is the most prestigious, largest-scale and highest-level international vocational skills competition, often referred to as the "Skills Olympics" and Shanghai is in line to host it. 

In the latest competition, over 1,400 young competitors from 69 member countries of the WorldSkills Organization tested their skills over the course of nearly a week.

The Chinese delegation, with 68 competitors, participated in all 59 events, setting a new record for the number of events and participants.

Of these, eight contestants from Shanghai competed in seven different events.

The eight participants are Zhu Lixuan in the hotel reception event, Zeng Xiaoan in health and social care, Zhu Junfeng in car body repairs, Jiang Zhaoheng in floristry, Pang Zerui in website technology, Zhou Yuxin in freight forwarding and logistics and Xie Huixuan and Lu Junwei in the industry 4.0 event.

On the morning of Sept 11 local time, the first day of the competition kicked off at the the Eurexpo Lyon Exhibition and Convention Centre, where over 1,400 young competitors began their skill challenges in a heated atmosphere.

Eurexpo Lyon spans 140,000 square meters, roughly equivalent to 26 standard football fields. It's been divided into seven halls to host 59 official events and three demonstration events.

After the morning session of the cybersecurity event, Chinese contestants Liu Zhizan and Hong Jiacong exited the competition area. 

They explained that the cybersecurity event includes four modules: Security assessments, emergency responses, simulated hacking attacks and troubleshooting corporate network issues. 

"It's like we play four different roles in network security – security administrator, forensic analyst, hacker and the 'police' who catch hackers," they said.

At the closing ceremony on Sept 15, Shanghai will receive the flag from Lyon as the host city for the 48th WorldSkills Competition in 2026.

Since joining the WorldSkills Organization in 2010, China has participated in six consecutive competitions, winning a total of 57 gold, 32 silver, 24 bronze medals and 63 excellence awards.
