Intl students dive into marine sustainability at Shanghai Summer School
International students collaborated with local peers to explore global marine sustainability during the 2025 Shanghai Summer School (Marine Sustainable Development Program), hosted by Shanghai Ocean University from May 28 to June 17.
Twenty-one students and faculty members from three universities in Montana, United States, engaged in three weeks of intensive study and exchange with 13 students from Shanghai Ocean University.
The program combined academic lectures, technological exploration, and cultural immersion, aiming to foster global collaboration and mutual understanding.
Participants attended expert-led seminars on ocean conservation, renewable energy and aquatic ecosystem restoration, while also conducting field research and collaborative discussions. They also visited cutting-edge innovation hubs, modern agricultural bases and water environment treatment projects to explore how digital technologies empower marine industries.
Cultural activities including paper cutting, calligraphy and dragon boat racing, as well as homestays with Shanghai families deepened participants' appreciation for Chinese culture and strengthened friendships among students.
The program is part of the city's long-running "Shanghai Summer School" initiative and reflects Shanghai Ocean University's commitment to international cooperation and global ocean governance. Students will continue their research and share findings at an online seminar on June 26.
