Summer programs in Shanghai draw international students
Shanghai International Studies University recently wrapped up three summer programs, which offered four-week immersive academic and cultural experiences to more than 50 students from 19 countries, including Spain, Italy, and Thailand.
The three programs — the Multilingual Translation and Interpretation Talents Program, the "Global South" International Chinese Education Program, and the Summer Program on "An Overview of Modern China and Yangtze River Delta Urban Development" — introduced students to Chinese language, culture and Shanghai's historical and urban development.
With a focus on Chinese language learning, the programs also provided training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while combining themed lectures, cultural workshops, and field visits for a well-rounded understanding of China.
Beyond classroom learning, students engaged in hands-on activities to experience the charm of traditional Chinese heritage. They explored calligraphy, tai chi, and paper-cutting.
The programs also included a nighttime Huangpu River cruise and a visit to the Expo Culture Park. These activities highlighted Shanghai's modernity and openness as an international metropolis.
Several field visits extended learning into the city and local enterprises. Students toured Canature Environmental Water Purification Industrial Park to learn about advances in Chinese green technology. The "Live Like a Local for a Day" activity gave them a taste of everyday life in the city.
A weekend trip to the ancient town of Zhujiajiao highlighted the historical heritage of the Jiangnan region, located south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Visits to the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center deepened students' understanding of China's modernization.
While offering Chinese learning opportunities, the program also strengthened cross-cultural exchanges, helping international students better understand Chinese culture.
