The inaugural Chinese property of Atwell Suites, a new brand launched by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), opened in Shanghai's Putuo district on Aug 15. Targeting young travelers, the hotel differentiates itself through unique spatial design, integration of local culture, and smart services.

Located at No 501 Wuning Road, the property boasts 174 rooms, and features a lobby designed in the style of a traditional keting, or guest-receiving courtyard. The lobby includes an artistic green wall, a co-working space, and a craft beer bar, creating a welcoming and versatile environment for guests. The breakfast area serves freshly brewed coffee and local specialties daily, and turns into a bistro by night — adopting a "coffee by day, alcohol by night" model.

Local cultural elements like Shanghai-style paper-cutting and Suzhou embroidery adorn the interiors, offering guests an immersive local vibe. The hotel also offers hand-drawn city walk maps highlighting Putuo's landmarks, including the Suzhou Creek riverside walk and M50 Creative Park.

Putuo has prioritized debut economy initiatives in recent years, attracting global hotel groups to invest. According to the district cultural and tourism authority, Putuo hosts over 76 hotels with more than 100 rooms each, 89 percent of which are chain brands. With Hilton, Marriott, and IHG having established their presence in this area, the district's hospitality landscape continues to expand.

By enhancing its business environment and management systems along the Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt, the district will facilitate collaboration among travel agencies, hotels, performance venues, and others to bring consumers innovative cultural and tourism experiences.
