Multinationals to debut innovative drugs, devices at CIIE
Multinational pharmaceutical and medical device companies in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, including Medtronic and Boehringer Ingelheim, have announced plans to attend the ninth China International Import Expo in November. Products developed through open innovation will be on display, while several locally developed or adapted drugs and medical devices will make their China debuts.
Medtronic, set to participate in the CIIE for the ninth consecutive year, will bring about 120 innovative products and solutions spanning cardiovascular care, neuroscience, surgical care, and diabetes management, marking its largest participation and biggest lineup of debut products and solutions to date. Seven products and solutions will make their debuts.
Under its China strategy 3.0, Medtronic has expanded its operations in China from product introduction and local manufacturing to include local R&D and innovation collaboration. An orthopedic surgical navigation and positioning system developed in China by Medtronic Kanghui will be exhibited for the first time. Its modular architecture enables intelligent switching between navigation and robotic modes.
China's medical innovation ecosystem is maturing, and implementation of Medtronic's China strategy 3.0 is gathering pace, said Alex Gu, senior vice president of Medtronic and president of Medtronic Greater China.
Medtronic looks forward to using the CIIE as a high-level open platform to bring cutting-edge medical technologies from around the world to Chinese patients sooner and help more locally developed and manufactured products reach global markets, he added.
AstraZeneca will again have a 1,000-square-meter booth in the medical equipment and healthcare exhibition area, having presented 20 products dubbed "CIIE babies" over the past eight years, covering oncology, respiratory, cardiovascular, and rare diseases. These products debuted at the expo, and some have since entered the Chinese market.
Lin Xiao, general manager of AstraZeneca China, said the CIIE is not only an important window for displaying global innovation but also a key platform for promoting multinational companies' investment and development in China.
AstraZeneca announced plans earlier this year to invest more than 100 billion yuan (about $14.95 billion) in China by 2030.
Boehringer Ingelheim, exhibiting for the eighth consecutive year, will showcase 14 innovative products and solutions in human pharmaceuticals and animal health, with several making their China debuts.
The company opened a new R&D center in Zhangjiang on Oct 12 and has announced plans to localize production of its pulmonary fibrosis drug Jascayd (nerandomilast). The center is designed to strengthen external innovation collaboration and early clinical development capabilities.
