Founded in 1954, Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) is particularly strong in liberal arts and has a range of disciplines including social sciences, natural sciences and engineering.

Home to over 20,000 full-time undergraduate students, 9,000 graduate students, and more than 1,000 international students, the university provides a vibrant international education environment.

The university has two main campuses in Shanghai's Xuhui district and Fengxian district. Most overseas students are at the Xuhui campus, near Xujiahui, one of Shanghai's most vibrant areas.

SHNU has 20 schools and offers 93 undergraduate programmes. Its two libraries hold more than 3.4 million books.

As international education is of great importance at SHNU, the university has established extensive foreign exchanges and cooperative ties. It began admitting international students in 1965 and has since become a university that enrols international students with Chinese government scholarships. SHNU also serves as a preparatory base for international students in Shanghai.

SHNU has developed cooperative relationships with nearly 200 universities and organisations in more than 40 countries and regions. The university has collaborated with seven universities in six countries to offer 10 Sino-foreign cooperative education projects.

In addition, SHNU has been actively involved in Chinese language teaching abroad. It has established two Confucius Institutes in collaboration with Fukuyama University in Japan and the University of Botswana in Botswana.
