The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) is a multidisciplinary applied research-oriented university with engineering as its core.

There are 18 schools, colleges and departments with more than 27,000 full-time students, including more than 16,000 undergraduate students and more than 11,000 graduate students at USST. Of its over 2,700 faculty and staff members, there are 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (adjunct academicians included), 80 national-level talents, 319 provincial or ministerial-level talents, 987 teachers with senior titles, and 543 doctoral supervisors.

USST currently has 64 undergraduate programmes, eight first-class discipline doctoral programmes, 28 first-class master's degree programmes, and 20 professional master's degree programmes and eight centres for post-doctoral studies.

USST has 20 national and 52 provincial or ministerial-level teaching platforms, seven national and 45 provincial or ministerial-level scientific research platforms. Its eight disciplines, namely Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental/Biological Science, Agricultural Science and Physics have long ranked among the top 1 percent of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in the world.

One of the earliest institutions of higher education in China to set up international cooperative programmes in school-running, USST, which currently has nearly 6,00 international students, has established cooperative relations with more than 200 institutions of higher education in 41 countries and regions. It has so far established two Sino-foreign joint educational institutions: the Sino-British College and Sino-German College.
