Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) is a multidisciplinary university with a focus on shipping, logistics, and ocean. It offers courses in engineering, management, economics, law, liberal arts, and science.

SMU has been regarded as a "cradle of international shipping specialists" since its founding in 1909. Over 210,000 of its graduates have worked in port and shipping-related businesses and government agencies.

The university was jointly built by the Ministry of Transport and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. In 2008, the main body of SMU was moved to the Lin-gang Special Area.

There are over 26,000 students studying at the university, including more than 16,000 undergrads, nearly 8,000 graduate students, and over 600 international students. SMU has nearly 1,200 full-time teachers, including over 200 professors.

SMU offers 53 undergraduate programs. Its four disciplines of engineering, computer science, social science and material science have been ranked in the world's top 1 percent on the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) list.

SMU has since 2010 had an international class that offers marine technology and shipping management programs to students from other maritime universities throughout the world.

SMU has established close ties with more than 100 international institutions in areas such as teacher communication, joint school-running, scientific research collaboration, and student exchanges, as well as close ties with internationally recognised shipping organizations and institutions such as the International Maritime Organisation, Baltic and International Maritime Council, and Norwegian Classification Society.
