Catch the blooms: Plum blossom season arrives in Chongming

It's that time of year again when the first traces of spring arrive on the scent of plum blossoms. For those looking to catch the season at its most delicate and luminous, here are several favorite spots in Chongming district, each offering its own distinctive charm.

Changxing Island Country Park

The park's plum garden sits on a small island encircled by water and is home to more than 1,000 trees of different varieties. Blossoms in shades of red, yellow, and green are now in full display, weaving a vivid tapestry of color. It's the kind of place where every snapshot feels like spring.

If you go: No 199 Qiugan Road, east of Fenghuang Highway, Changxing Island

Dongping National Forest Park

The park's landscape has been carefully designed with potted plum displays, pavilions, and rock formations, each turn revealing a new view. The blossoms are at their best now, with gentle fragrance drifting through the air.

Gaojiazhuang Ecological Park

Tens of thousands of yellow plums are in full bloom here, dotting the landscape like scattered stars and appearing especially delicate in light rain. Red plums are also beginning to open, offering visitors a chance to see both types in a single visit.

Buzhen Town Park

Red plums line the southern side of the lake near the covered walkway and at the park's north entrance. A leisurely stroll along the path leads visitors into the blossoms' gentle fragrance — a simple yet enduring pleasure on a crisp spring day.

Juxun village

Spring is quietly arriving in Juxun village, where red plums have begun to bloom, casting a soft pink hue over the landscape. Walking through the village, the scent lingers in the air, and the red buds against bare branches create a scene that feels almost like traditional ink painting.

Xincheng Park

Red plums are now blooming across the park, mainly along the north side of Dinglan Road (south of the park) and on the lawns flanking the north plaza. Scattered among the green trees, they add a splash of color to the scenery.

Yingzhou Park

Red plums can be found south of Chenhu Lake, near the southwest corner of the main lawn, and atop the small hill. Yellow plums are in bloom west of Canghai Pavilion, in the herb garden, and in front of the north gate. Together, red, yellow, pink, and white blossoms create the signature palette of the season.

A note on timing: Plum blossoms typically last for two to three months. This year, the peak viewing period in Chongming runs from mid-February through the end of March. Don't wait too long — spring is calling.
