Du Yuesheng, a name synonymous with the vibrant tapestry of old Shanghai, was a business and political titan who ruled the gangs on the Bund. Although he passed away over 70 years ago, his legacy continues to captivate, and his former residence, the Du Mansion, is a testament to his storied life.

Originally constructed in 1926 at No 236 West Ninghai Road in Huangpu district, the mansion was Du's actual home. In 2015, it was relocated to Jiading district's Xiyunlou commercial area, preserving its historical charm.

The Du Mansion stands as a symbol of Shanghai's urban elegance and a witness to pivotal historical events. Its Shikumen-style architecture, with red brick walls and tiled roofs, was the backdrop for Du's social and business gatherings.

The mansion is a two-story building covering approximately 1,000 square meters. While the design is Western, the structure features traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon joints. The mansion boasts over 20 towering pillars reaching the second floor, with the main hall's ceiling beams carved from premium teak. The most striking feature is a series of golden-threaded nanmu girders, each weighing a ton, adorned with exquisite carvings.

The Du Mansion unveiled its first public exhibition "Coordinates of Shanghai" on April 26. The exhibition, which will run for six months, is divided into eight sections, offering a glimpse into the mansion's storied past. The first-floor gallery showcases a collection of historical artifacts, including sewing machines, typewriters, and cipher machines. The second-floor gallery highlights the mansion's role in key moments of modern commercial, theatrical, and wartime history.
