Background

The Chinese Government Scholarship program on the "Silk Road Project" is funded by the Ministry of Education to recruit outstanding international students from countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative to study in China. Shanghai Maritime University's "Belt and Road Shipping Talents Graduate Training Program" takes this opportunity to welcome applications from young, outstanding students from Belt and Road countries to this fully sponsored program.

Program features and specialty

The Transport Planning and Management program is a specialty offered by the Shanghai Maritime University, or SMU. This program mainly studies theories, applications, and technologies related to ports and shipping, logistics, and comprehensive transportation models to meet transport demands in terms of efficiency, economy, energy preservation, and environmental protection and safety. The discipline of "Transport Planning and Management" was authorized to confer a master’s degree in 1981 and a doctorate in 1998. In 1996, it was rated as a key discipline of the Ministry of Communications and in 2007 was listed as a national key (training) discipline. In 2014, SMU launched its English language master’s degree program in transport planning and management. This program has become famous, with 39 international graduates since its introduction. According to the 2023 World-class Subjects Ranking published by Shanghai’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, SMU’s Transportation Engineering program was listed in the world’s top 100 subjects.

Scholarship

1. Funding covers tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and insurance

d. Comprehensive medical insurance: 800 yuan ($111) per person per year

Eligibility

Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, excellent academic performance, in good health, below 35 years old, and have obtained IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 / Cambridge English B2 (or above) within the last two years.

Application materials

1. CGS Application Form: China Government Scholarship Form (in English or Chinese)

2. Passport bio data page: If the passport validity does not meet the requirement (passport expires before September 2024), please renew your passport before submitting the application.

3. Notarized copy of highest degree: Prospective diploma or degree applicants must submit an official certificate of expected graduation issued by their current institution.

4. Academic transcript (from undergraduate level): Transcripts should be in English or Chinese showing records from first to last academic semesters and must be issued by the Academic Affairs Office, Graduate School, or competent administrative department. Transcripts in other foreign languages must be translated and notarized as required.

5. Language proficiency certificate: IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 / Duolingo English Test 110 / Cambridge English B2 (or above) obtained within the last two years.

Exemption from English proficiency:

a. Native English-speakers

b. Applicants whose high school / undergraduate courses are taught in English

c. Applicants who can provide other equivalent English proficiency certificates

6. Academic study plan: A study plan written in English or Chinese containing more than 1,000 words or characters.

7. Two recommendation letters: An applicant must submit two recommendation letters (written in English or Chinese) issued by an associate professor or a professor. These letters must describe the applicant’s objective for studying in China, comprehensive abilities, and evaluation for future growth, as well as the cooperation between supervisors or exchange between universities in China and abroad.

8. Foreigners physical medical examination: A photocopy of the Foreigners Physical Examination form completed in English (the original copy is kept by the applicant). This form is issued by the Chinese Quarantine Authority. The physical examination must cover each item listed on the Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Test results are only valid for six months from the date of issue.

9. Certificate of non-criminal conviction: Applicants are required to submit a valid certificate of no criminal record issued by a local public security issued within six months prior to the date of application.

Application procedure

Step 1: Applicants must submit their applications to CSC Online Application System

(https://www.campuschina.org) before May 20. Please choose category B and note that SMU agency number is (10245).

Step 2: Applicants are required to submit their applications to SMU via gjy.shmtu.edu.cn/register

Step 3: Shanghai Maritime University will complete the review of the application materials, and conduct interviews and evaluations before the end of May. Afterwards, a Pre-admission Notice of Chinese Government Scholarship shall be issued to successful applicants.

Step 4: Shanghai Maritime University shall send application materials of successful applicants to the China Scholarship Council for expert review. The CSC is solely responsible for the declaration of final successfully admitted candidates (specific review duration is determined by CSC).

Step 5: Upon receipt of the final notice from CSC, Shanghai Maritime University shall announce the admission result, and Admission Notice and Visa application form (JW201) shall be sent to the admitted applicant before July 31.
